Journal visibility and audiences

Journal sharing combines the template’s maximum reach with the learner’s choice for an individual entry.

The visibility levels

LevelWho can read the entry
Facilitators onlyAuthorised staff in moderation; this template setting is staff-only.
CohortLearners in the author’s cohort and authorised staff.
All learnersLearners across cohorts and authorised staff.
PublicAnyone through the public feed, as well as learners and authorised staff.

Learners choose Cohort, All learners, or Public for their own entry. They cannot use the sharing setting to hide their submission from authorised facilitators.

The more restrictive setting wins

A Public entry in a Cohort journal reaches only the cohort. A Cohort entry in a Public journal also reaches only the cohort. Public display requires both settings to be Public.

Changing a journal’s audience

Increasing the template’s visibility can expose existing submitted entries whose own sharing choice already permits the wider audience. Review existing entries before widening a journal to Public.

Cohort authoring is a separate control

Selecting a cohort for a journal limits who can fill it in. It does not impose a second limit on feed reach. A cohort-specific journal can share entries with all learners or the public if the visibility settings permit it.

Public media and moderation

Public feeds exclude audio and use photo thumbnails, but can display full reflection text and downloadable documents. Do not assume a file is private because it is an attachment. Hiding an entry removes it from feeds; authorised staff retain moderation access.

Collaborator reflections are excluded from learner and public feeds regardless of these ordinary journal settings.
